As one of the modern scourges of our time, the rate of Type 2 diabetes in Canada has risen nearly 72% in the past ten years. This is in parallel to a sharp increase in nationwide obesity. In many cases, Type 2 diabetes can be reversed through consistent healthy lifestyle and maintenance of a healthy weight. While Type 2 diabetes can be managed with a balanced diet and regular insulin injections (for uncontrolled diabetes sufferers) , several studies also suggest that medical cannabis may aid in the reduction and prevention of symptoms associated with this chronic health condition.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most prevalent non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis. CBD has shown to significantly reduce pro-inflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream and the incidence of diabetes in non-obese mice (Weiss, et al., 2006). It’s also been shown to be effective at slowing the rate of Type-2 diabetes disease manifestations in human though better weight management from thalamic signaling modulation (Weiss, et al., 2008). Research has also found that CBD therapy can provide significant protection from diabetic retinopathy (El-Remessy, et al., 2006). In turn, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive compound found in cannabis, will sensitize the insulin receptors and inhibit α-HCG production by adipocytes, which has shown to reduce glucose intolerance and increase insulin sensitivity in obese mice, thus reducing the risk of type-2 diabetes (Wargent, et al., 2013). Although anecdotal, in humans, studies on recreational cannabis use has been correlated with a significant lower prevalence of type-1 and type-2 diabetes (Rajavashisth, et al., 2012).
